This formulation is due to my colleague Fred Adler.
As I say here this discussion goes by very quickly in Okasha’s book and also Okasha focuses on Sterelny and Kitcher but not on Waters (See e.g. Waters 1991), who goes to some lengths to defend the alleles as environment view. A related criticism to mine is made by Lloyd (2005) and Lloyd et al. (forthcoming).
