End-to-side coaptation: An important tool in peripheral nerve surgery

BACKGROUND: An explanation is offered for the contradicting results of the clinical application of end-to-side coaptation. METHODS: We used small monofunctional nerves as donors and small monofunctional nerves as recipients. In one case a direct end-to-side coaptation was performed. In the majority of cases the nerve graft was applied end-to-side to the donor nerve and end-to-end to the recipient nerve. RESULTS: There were satisfactory results in the vast majority of cases. CONCLUSIONS: The technique under the given premises can be recommended.

Zusammenfassung

GRUNDLAGEN: Eine Erklärung für gegensätzliche Ergebnisse in der End-zu-Seit-Koaptation wird nachstehend angeführt. METHODIK: Wir verwendeten kleine monofunktionale Spendernerven und kleine monofunktionale Empfängernerven. In einem Fall wurde eine direkte End-zu-Seit-Koaptation gewählt. In der Mehrzahl der Fälle wurde ein Nerventransplantat End-zu-Seit an den Spendernerv und End-zu-End an den Empfängernerv angebracht. ERGEBNISSE: Es ergaben sich befriedigende Ergebnisse in der Mehrheit der Fälle. SCHLUSSFOLGERUNGEN: Die chirurgische Technik der End-zu-Seit-Koaptation kann unter diesen Voraussetzungen empfohlen werden.
