Geriatric aspects of elderly emergency patients

Zusammenfassung

Hintergrund

Abstract

Background

The number of geriatric patients presenting to emergency departments is increasing. Apart from advanced age, multimorbidity and frailty are the leading problems when treating these patients.

Method

Research of the current literature.

Results and conclusion

Their vulnerability to various stressors results in a poorer outcome and prognosis, loss of autonomy and independence and increased mortality. Neurocognitive impairment and acute neurological disturbances, e.g. delirium often go unrecognized; therefore, it is important that these core geriatric syndromes be considered in the acute medical management of elderly people to identify all geriatric patients at risk.
