Abstract
Elastic stable intramedullary nailing (ESIN) is the method of choice in the majority of cases with (meta)diaphyseal shaft fractures of long bone shafts during childhood and adolescence. This method cannot be successfully applied without a good understanding of the specific biomechanical aspects involved, without which it is not possible to understand the contraindications for ESIN or to appreciate the correct surgical technique. It is also helpful to learn a few tricks of the trade and to become acquainted with the possible pitfalls of the technique. This paper gives a brief overview of ESIN in fracture cases.
