Abstract
The annual incidence of endometrial cancer in Germany amounts to 10.000 cases, and thus similar to rates in other Western countries constitutes the most frequent type of cancer in postmenopausal women. In comparison to poorer regions in Africa or Asia, this evident incidence in industrialized nations is seen to exemplify a cancer form induced by lifestyle. Numerous factors associated with our prosperity such as obesity, inadequate physical activity, metabolic syndrome with hyperinsulinemia, ingestion of estrogen preparations with insufficient progesterone and tamoxifen as well as diabetes mellitus promote the development of endometrial cancer. It follows from this that preventive measures directed against these factors represent a good chance for further reducing the disease incidence.
