Summary
In the last decades attachment research and attachment theory contributed significantly to a better understanding of mental disorders and pathological developments in children and adults. Furthermore, the findings made in this context open up new perspectives on psychotherapeutic treatment situations.
The aim of this paper is to apply specific aspects and findings of attachment research to the treatment of adults, including the identification of attachment styles in the psychotherapeutic setting and their implications for psychotherapeutic diagnosis. Attachment-oriented intervention strategies are developed by presenting the treatment of a patient with an avoidant attachment style as an example.
