Summary
Corrosion resistant prehardened DIN 1.2316-type tool steels (X36CrMo17) are generally used for plastic moulds or mould inserts in the plastics processing industry. The most important properties for these applications are corrosion resistance, polishability and good machinability at appropriate mechanical properties and a hardness of about 300 HB. In recent years the fraction of glass fibers in the processed plastics and the clamping forces during the injection moulding process have been increased. For this reason it is necessary to use mould steels with higher wear resistance and dimension stability. This can be reached by increasing the hardness level. Thus, other properties like corrosion resistance, toughness and machinability are affected. In this paper it will be shown how the best combination between microstructural homogeneity and increased strength leads to optimised properties of the new alloy M303 HIGH HARD.
