Abstract
We calculate potential energies for charged and neutral jellium clusters which fragment in two pieces, in the framework of the liquid drop model plus Strutinsky shell corrections obtained from the two-centre harmonic oscillator. We consider the symmetric fragmentation of Na +4 +2 , Na +1 +8 , and Na38. Good agreement is found with results obtained by self-consistent methods, which are much more involved.
