Summary
The main purpose of laboratory tests in patients with acute coronary syndromes is the exclusion of an acute myocardial infarction and the detection of myocardial micronecrosis. Patients with minor myocardial cell damage can best be identified by measurement of cardiac troponin T and possibly also cardiac troponin I levels. Other serum markers of acute ischemia lack specifity and are, therefore, currently of little clinical significance.
