Enhanced evanescent coupling to whispering-gallery modes due to gold nanorods grown on the microresonator surface

Abstract

The evanescent fields of whispering-gallery modes of a high-Q dielectric microresonator are locally enhanced via excitation of the surface plasmon resonances of gold nanorods grown on the microresonator’s surface. This results in enhanced coupling between the microresonator and an adjacent tapered optical fiber for frequencies in the vicinity of the surface plasmon resonance. The experimental results presented here demonstrate coupling enhancement by a factor of 100–1000, accompanied by an increase in absorption and scattering loss that is very small by comparison.
