Structural studies of supercritical carbon dioxide in confined space

Abstract.

The behavior of CO2 adsorbed on a microporous carbon sample, at an isothermal temperature slightly above the critical point, is studied by in situ neutron powder diffraction. The diffraction patterns provide evidence that the adsorbed phase is in a densified state, comparable to dense supercritical fluid or even bulk liquid, at pressures well below the critical one. In addition, the radial distribution functions reveal the presence of orientational correlations between adsorbed molecules.
