Abstract
The upper cervical spine has a special significance due to the role of the neck musculature as a sensor of the head-to-rump positioning and because of the enormous mobility of the cranial joints. Furthermore, the mandibular joint is linked with the cranial joints by a kinematical chain via the supra- and infrahyoid bone muscles. Many neuroanatomical, functional and clinical observations support the hypothesis that disturbances at one of the axial points of this network are often the cause for the wide variety of mostly very painful symptoms in the area of the craniocervical junction or the mastication apparatus.
