Agenesis of sphenoid sinuses

Abstract.

We present a 50-year-old woman with agenesis of the sphenoid sinuses. She was referred for evaluation of the aeration status of the sphenoid sinus and related nasal structures before endoscopic transsphenoidal hypophysectomy for pituitary microadenoma. Axial and coronal computed tomography (CT) scans revealed absence of the sphenoid sinuses and the right posterior ethmoidal cell. Agenesis of sphenoid sinuses documented using CT scans is uncommon. One case with a history of Hand-Schuller-Christian disease has been reported in the English language literature. In the case reported here agenesis of the sphenoid sinuses was not accompanied by craniofacial anomaly or skeletal disease. Résumé.

Nous rapportons l'observation d'une femme de 50 ans présentant une agénésie du sinus sphénoïdal. Elle fut adressée pour un bilan des structures naso-sinusiennes et notamment l'étude de la pneumatisation du sinus sphénoïdal avant la réalisation d'une hypophysectomie par voie trans-sphénoïdale pour micro-adénome hypophysaire. Une tomodensitométrie en coupes axiales et coronales mit en évidence l'absence de pneumatisation du sinus sphénoïdal et des cellules ethmoïdales postérieures droites. L'agénésie du sinus sphénoïdal objectivée sur la tomodensitométrie est une situation peu fréquente. Une seule observation a été décrite dans la littérature de langue anglaise dans un contexte de maladie de Hand-Schuller-Christian. Dans notre propre observation, l'agénésie du sinus sphénoïdal n'était associée à aucune anomalie cranio-faciale ou squelettique.
