Abstract
Alcohol was determined in blood from the femoral vein, psoas major muscle and quadriceps femoris muscle collected from 290 corpses. The samples were taken at autopsies performed several days up to several weeks postmortem. A total of 197 corpses with no signs of putrefaction were used as controls. The number of cases with an ethanol concentration between 0.1 and 1 g/kg increased with the degree of putrefaction. The mean concentration of an unambiguous postmortem ethanol production was 0.62 g/kg but in isolated cases levels up to 3 g/kg were measured. In the absence of blood, muscle samples are recommended for the detection of ethanol. Parallel to ethanol, 1-butanol and 1-propanol are also often produced and can be used as a marker of putrefaction at concentrations >0.02 g/kg.
