Abstract

In the hole making process, CFRP often has defects such as burrs and tears. Especially, it is more difficult to make high-quality and high-efficiency holes in thick-section CFRP which has a negative effect on its application. Based on the analysis of the mechanism of helical milling, the orthogonal experiments on the 24-mm Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastics (CFRP) that affect the quality of hole making, such as spindle speed, feed per tooth, and number of blade teeth were conducted. The influence of process parameters on the quality of hole making was analyzed. Finally, the range analysis method was used to obtain the optimal hole-making parameters: spindle speed is 4500 rpm, feed per tooth is 0.02 mm/z, the number of blade teeth is 2. Based on the obtained optimal parameters, a novel hole making process with variable parameters was proposed, and two groups of parameter combinations were designed. Through the analysis of the hole morphology, surface roughness, axial force, and aperture deviation after the experiment, it is concluded that hole making process with variable parameters can meet the technical requirements of thick-section CFRP.
