Abstract
Neonaticide, the killing of a newborn, is one of the most tragic outcomes of pregnancy and is generally committed by the mother herself. Organizations offering places to anonymously leave newborns for adoption (known as “Babyklappen” in Germany) as well as places to give birth anonymously are supposed to avoid this harm. But it is arguable whether they actually fulfil this function and save newborns’ lives. Because of the anonymity of mothers taking advantage of these options, systematic investigation is quite difficult. An appropriate scientific approach seems to be the exploration of women who killed their babies. Neonaticide research points out that these mothers typically negate (ignore, deny, or do not perceive) their pregnancies before they commit the neonaticide. Concerning the possibilities of prevention and gynaecological intervention, it seems reasonable to also investigate women who negated their pregnancies but did not kill their newborns. In this article, different forms of negation are illustrated using case studies. The role of negation concerning neonaticide and the possibility of using anonymity-related options is described. First results of a comparison of cases of negated pregnancy with and without neonaticide are presented, and preventive interventions are discussed.
