Abstract
A secure emotional attachment of an infant is essential for healthy development. This begins during pregnancy and grows stronger during the first years of life. New relationship experiences will influence the attachment during the course of life. Physical, sexual and emotional violence of parents against their children as well as deprivation will result in disturbances of brain maturation, failure to thrive and the development of attachment disorders as a very severe form of early psychopathology. Early prevention with pregnant women and their partners as realized in the preventive program “SAFE® – Safe Attachment Formation for Educators” is possible and supports secure attachment development of children.
