Abstract
Identifying the fertile window in the menstrual cycle, the phase during which intercourse is most likely to result in pregnancy, is important for many gynaecological problems. Monitoring of LH in blood or urine samples (LH peak) and serial ovarian ultrasound examination to detect the maximum follicle diameter (MFD) are routinely used in special institutions. However, for these examinations women are dependant on a doctor. but modern methods of fertility observation and charting, the methods of natural family planning (NFP) can be done at home sometimes using new technologies (NT) in NFP. In this paper we present the various gauges, devices and cycle monitoring computer programs and try to rate their effectiveness based on the literature and our own studies. Finally we report some results of a prospective comparative trial of seven such devices with symptothermal methods of NFP. A total of 65 women tested two devices in variable combinations after a learning phase from which 558 learning cycles and 110 test cycles were available for evaluation. In the test cycle the fertile window detected by the device was compared with the fertile time determined using ultrasound and LH peak measurement.
