Multimedia presentation of radiological image data using the internet

Zusammenfassung

Ziel: Neueste Entwicklungen im Umfeld des Internet ermöglichen die Integration von Audio, Video, digitalen Filmsequenzen und dreidimensionalen Daten. Die Eignung dieser aktuellen Fortschritte für den Einsatz in der medizinischen Dokumentation soll demonstriert werden.

Methode: Unsere bestehende Software zur medizinischen Bildauswertung und 3D-Rekonstruktion wurde erweitert, so daß Bilder, animierte Filmsequenzen und komplexe 3D-Modelle in Datenformaten erzeugt werden können, die im Internet gebräuchlich sind.

Ergebnisse: Eine direkte Einbindung der multimedialen Ergebnisse in Internetdokumente wurde ermöglicht. Zur Betrachtung der Daten sind keine komplizierten, spezialisierten Programme mehr notwendig, sondern per Internetsoftware können 2D- und 3D-Resultate bequem visualisiert werden.

Schlußfolgerungen: Das Internet stellt kostenfreie bzw. kostengünstige Software zur Darstellung von Ton, Bildern, Filmsequenzen und 3D-Modellen zur Verfügung. Somit bieten sich die Techniken des Internet in idealer Weise als Basis für lokale Krankenhaus-Informationssysteme, computergestützte medizinische Ausbildung und Telekonferenzen an.

Summary

Aim: Recent developments of the Internet (World Wide Web) allow the integration of audio, video, digital film sequences, and three-dimensional data. The applicability of these innovations for medical documentation is demonstrated.

Methods: Our existing software for medical image processing and 3D reconstruction was extended to provide images, film sequences, and complex 3D models in an Internet-compatible data format.

Results: The multimedia results of the image processing were integrated into Internet documents. Specialized programs are no longer necessary for visualization. The Internet software allows for user-friendly handling and interactive presentation of the 2D and 3D data.

Conclusions: The Internet offers public-domain software for display of images, audio/video, and 3D data. Thus, the tools of the Internet represent an ideal basis for local hospital information systems, computer-aided medical education, and teleconferencing.
