Abstract
In the course of their emotional development, children acquire competencies in the expression, knowledge and regulation of emotion. Children with delays in social-emotional competencies are at high risk of developing behavioural problems. Therefore, social-emotional development should be assessed in pediatric practices. The routine screening of emotional competencies in preschool children is recommended in order to initiate further assessment for children with low emotional competence and to provide intervention in case of need at an early stage. In this review, the diagnostic process is discussed and instruments for the assessment of emotional competencies are presented.
