Abstract

Synthesis, structural characterization, and biological activity studies of benzo[b]thiophene derivatives containing β-lactam nucleus are described. Cycloaddition of azomethines (4aj) to in situ-generated ketenes from 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid, in the presence of triethylamine and benzenesulfonyl chloride afforded the title compounds (5aj). The stereochemical course of reaction depends on both the substituents on the ketenes as well as on the imines. The mechanism for the formation of cis/trans derivative is presented.
