Conclusions
-
1.
Measurement has been made of the variation of the optical densities of the water overtone absorption bands with the concentration of water in aqueous solutions of acids and salts.
-
2.
Deviations from Beer's law have been used to calculate values of nυ defined as the ratio of the difference of the analytical and measured concentrations of water to the concentrations of the dissolved compound.
-
3.
Analysis of our own data and those of the literature indicated that the nυ value is often identical with the hydration number of hydrogen or hydroxide ions in strong aqueous solutions of acids and bases.
-
4.
In general, there is no correlation between nυ values and hydration numbers in aqueous salt solutions.
