Arterial anomalies at the base of the skull

Summary

Six arterial anomalies at the base of the skull are reported. Five of these concern the course, or the filling, of the middle meningeal artery. After correlation with basic anatomical and embryological facts it appears that a satisfactory embryological explanation, based on regressions and reversal of flux, may be proposed.

The same embryological phenomenon is finally applied to the aberrant course of the internal carotid artery, and shows how it must be considered as aberrant flow.
