Abstract

Viscoelastic, transparent, and amorphous materials can be obtained from certain mixtures of fluorianted hydrophobic nonionic surfactants, fluorocarbon, and large amounts of water. They may be termed as water-in (water-in-oil microemulsion) emulsions, and their structure has been investigated by small-angle neutron scattering (SANS), by making use of the contrast variation method. One important parameter is the hydration rate of the oxyethylene chains of the surfactant, as revealed by the high sensitivity of the neutron spectra towards the internal organization inside the micelles. Whether the size and/or the number concentration of these micelles are the important parameters governing the stability of these systems is a question naturally suggested by these recent findings.
