Abstract

The dc conductivity, spin susceptibility and 2kF and 4kF structural instabilities for a one-band one-dimensional conductor are reviewed in the limiting cases of very weak and very strong electron-electron repulsions. The experimental evidence from X-ray and neutron scattering, EPR and dc conductivity for various members of the alloy series (TTF)1−x(TSeF)x-TCNQ is analyzed in terms of the predictions for these two limiting cases. It is concluded that even the relative strength of the electron-electron repulsions on the two kinds of stacks must still be considered an open question. The superstructural behavior in this series in the semiconducting phase is also analyzed with particular emphasis on the relation of the superlattice dimension a′ along the a axis to the tendencies of the two kinds of stacks to show 2kF instabilities. It is concluded that the original picture, so relatively satisfactory for TTF-TCNQ, becomes less satisfactory as more and more of the phase diagram is explored. Though models have been proposed to explain various parts of the phase diagram, a general statistical mechanical theory, presumably including non-nearest-neighbor competing interactions, higher-order interactions, and disorder, is still needed.
