Abstract

We present and discuss the oscillations observed in the small angle neutron scattering pattern of brine rich phases of surfactant for scattering vecotrs ranging from 0.1 to 0.5 Å−1. These oscillations are expected to reflect the form factor of the local structure of the surfactant aggregates. Adjustment of the data to the form factors for the previously assumed local structure indeed confirms the assumption and indicates a certain polydispersity in the characteristic dimension (radius for the spherical or cylindrical local structure, or thickness for the planar local structure). The scattering pattern from solutions of large elongated micelles for scattering vectors in the range 0 to 0.05 Å−1 displays features characteristics of semi-flexible coils: the persistence length is found to be 180 ± 50 Å.
