Abstract

A liquid crystalline cubic phase occurs in systems of di(alkyl)dimethylammoniumm bromide, liquid hydrocarbon and water. Its location in the ternary isothermal phase diagram is aboaut the same irrespective of the hydrocarbon. Its microstructure is not yet known but must be continuous with respect both to hydrocarbon and water. The structure is probably closely related to that in neighbouring parts of the optically isotropic, transparent fluid phase occurring in the same systems, usually called the “microemulsion”.
