Abstract

Applying a voltage to a nematic liquid crystal sandwiched between two electrodes leads to convection when a critical threshold value of the driving voltage is exceeded. The patterns arising above this threshold are studied experimentally. Special emphasis is put on an instability leading to travelling waves and the role of defects on the route to turbulence.
