Abstract
Modern techniques of eye movement registration facilitate a deeper analysis of the processes of map-based information transfer, which may enrich theory formation in cartography “Heatmaps” are a specific tool for the visualization of eye movement data. They support a fast and intuitive analysis of the map user’s viewing behaviour. In heatmaps, data on fixation counts and fixation durations, for instance, are summarized and represented. In this paper, the construction and analysis of heatmaps are explained, with reference to a study on the effects of graphic map elements that reference represented space. Systematic distortions are often transferred to spatial memory via map graphics. They can be corrected by adding or graphically emphasizing grid structures to (topographic) base maps. This study concerns the influences of grid structures and also of topographic features on map viewing behaviour when learning object locations. The results (heatmaps) indicate specific patterns that show the relevance of grids and topographic elements as graphic features that support orientation in a map.
