What is a beautiful face? Searching for criteria

Abstract

Over several years, the author and his group have been engaged in patient-specific mathematical modelling and operation planning of face surgery. This work naturally raises the question of what constitutes a beautiful face–a question which has to be asked time and again for each patient. This paper examines the background of this question: What can philosophy, ethnology, psychology or evolutionary biology tell the mathematician and the information scientist on what the criteria for beautiful and »a beautiful face« are?
