Teaching strategies utilized one year after participating in an inservice elementary science program

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the frequency with which elementary teachers taught science over a four-week period, and which teaching strategies they utilized during that time frame one year after extensive inservice training. Twenty-one K-6 teachers of science who had participated in the K-6 Science and Math (KSAM) Project, a NSF sponsored program, were involved in the study. After one year, teachers submitted weekly logs of the frequency and teaching strategies used for each lesson. Results revealed that 61.5% of the responding teachers taught science 16 or more times over the four weeks, and that discussion and hands-on methods were the most frequently used teaching strategies.
