Abstract
The «linear combination of atomic orbitals» approximation of the molecular orbital method is used to calculate the energy of a square plane and a simple cubic space crystal built up of atoms of one kind. In this approximation the energy is given by the Coulomb, exchange and overlap integrals of neighbouring atoms. The comparison of the chain, plane and space cases suggests conclusions as to the density of states in the band in the respective dimensions.
