Samenvatting

Op 30 september trok MSD de COX-2-remmer rofecoxib (Vioxx®) uit de markt terug. In de tussentijdse evaluatie van het APPROVe-onderzoek bleek het relatieve risico op bevestigde cardiovasculaire gebeurtenissen bij gebruik van rofecoxib flink toe te nemen. Dit onderzoek onder 2600 patiënten was opgezet om de werkzaamheid van rofecoxib ter voorkoming van darmpoliepen te beoordelen bij patiënten met een voorgeschiedenis van gezwellen in de dikke darm; het ging dus niet om het effect van pijnbestrijding bij artrose.
