Summary

The care of children with burns asks for a very structured approach, as counts for all trauma patients. Besides that, the wound has to be assessed and treated. This article describes the pathophysiology of burns and the special aspects that relate to burn victims, such as: calculation of the total body surface area burn; rehydration; pain control; wound dressing; and criteria for referral and transport to a burn unit. Moreover, if the burn victim is a child, child abuse should be considered as a cause for the burns.
