The current longitudinal study examined the direct and indirect effects (through peer contacts) of parental knowledge on externalizing problem behaviour. 457 Adolescents filled out questionnaires about problem behaviour, parenting, and peers on three measurement waves. Regarding initial levels of behaviour, results show direct and indirect relations between parental knowledge and delinquent and aggressive behaviour. Only direct effects were found between parental knowledge and both types of problem behaviours when the rate of change in behaviour was considered. Stronger effects were found between parental knowledge and problem behaviour for boys, and between contact with peers and aggression for girls. In general, different paths were found for delinquent and aggressive behaviour that show different relations with parenting. Different types of problem behaviour should not be treated as identical.
