Safety aspects of colonic cleansing prior to colonoscopies and surgical interventions of the colon

Abstract

The introduction of polyethylene glycol 3350-based electrolyte solution (Golytely) in 1980 for cleansing of the colonic lumen prior to endoscopy or surgery was an improvement because this solution does not influence systemic electrolyte and water homeostasis. Trials to modify the elctrolyte composition (for example phosphate) or to reduce the intake of water in order to improve the compliance of the patient are a potential risk for serious complications.
