Abstract
The spongillid spicules from the Middle Eocene sediments of Grube Messel show different taphonomic traces: (1) An undirected and a “guided” corrosion of Opal A, (2) formation of spicule substitutes by precipitation of Opal CT, (3) corrosion of the spicule substitutes, and (4) silica precipitation on the spicule substitutes. We found traces of corrosion similar to stage 1 in Messel in a livingTrochospongilla horrida which was overgrown by a specimen ofEunapius fragilis (both: Spongillidae). However, the role of biogenic factors in spicule corrosion appears to be rather unlikely. Factors for the transformation of opal A to opal CT are discussed in context with the genesis of the Messel Formation.
