Abstract

Conodont deformation and textural alteration patterns in Devonian and Carboniferous conodont collections as well as new material have been examined using data from several hundred conodont samples from the Rheinisches Schiefergebirge (Germany) and the Montagne Noire (France). Besides thermal alteration (prekinematic coalification), other factors affecting conodont colour alteration (e.g. hydrothermal solutions, staining effects, contact metamorphism, etc.) are discussed and summarized. Improved conodont colour charts from naturally altered conodonts are presented.
