Spio martinensis Mesnil, 1896 (polychaeta, Spionidae): Not a new record in German coastal waters of the North Sea

Abstract

The genusSpio was reidentified for the south-eastern North Sea. The most common species in German waters areS. filicornis, S. martinensis andS. goniocephala.

The reidentification revealed that most of the specimens, which had been identified asS. filicornis in earlier investigations of the German coastal waters, are in factS. martinensis.

Spio martinensis was first found in 1970 off the island of Norderney. The species occurs primarily in shallow areas with fine sands and rather high hydrodynamics. In contrast,S. filicornis lives in subtidal depths on fine sands, andS. goniocephala also inhabits the subtidal area, but prefers coarser sediments. The previous interpretation ofS. martinensis being a newly recorded species in German coastal waters in 1994 is due to misidentifications in the past.
