Abstract
The genuine brackish water crabRhithropanopeus harrisii (Gould, 1841) was introduced to Europe in the nineteenth century from the east coast of North America, possibly by transport in ballast water or as a member of the fouling community on ships’ hulls. In Germany this neozoon was detected for the first time in the Kiel Canal in 1936. Over the last 20 years a successive spreading of the crab was observed. It was found recently also on the German coast of the Baltic Sea, in the North Sea estuaries of Eider, Elbe, Ems and Weser as well as in small brackish waters. It appears that the crab may develop highest abundances in brackish water systems with low currents (canals, ditches, etc.) in the transition zone between oligo- and mesohaline conditions (around 5 PSU); a salinity of approx. 16 PSU seems to represent the upper limit for setup of a successfully breeding community in Germany. The successfully establishment ofR. barrisii was probably supported by the existence of a so far vacant ecological niche. It seems thatR. harrisii has not yet achieved its maximum spreading in northern Europe.
