Abstract
The mechanical integrity of wood contributes to adhesive bond integrity. Toughness is the mechanical property most sensitive to thermal treatment. In this study, the toughness of yellow-poplar veneer was measured on specimens overdried at 170°C, 195°C, and 220°C. Heating at 170°C for as long as 224 min decreased toughness slightly; higher temperatures had a greater effect. In comparing toughness values to values of other properties obtained previously, there were moderate correlations to post-treatment equilibrium moisture content, light reflectance, and loss of wood mass.
