Summary
The Devonian trilobitesPhacops andAsteropyge (generic assignment uncertain) from the Hunsrück Shale, (Fed. Rep. Germany) and the OrdovicianTriarthrus from the Utica Shale, (Rome, N. Y.) were studied with the aid of X-rays.
The formation of the Hunsrück Shale in the light of earlier work and of new information gained with X-rays, and also the conditions of preservation of the fossils in these shales in pyrite are discussed. Owing to this extraordinary preservation the X-ray photos revealed new details of the exite branches ofPhacops, parts of the alimentary system (including oesophagus, stomach, intestinal diverticula and intestine), and internal structures of the compound eyes. In the light of the new discoveries the authors try to draw a complete picture of these trilobites and their life.
