Summary
Of the three species,D. ananassae, D. bipectinala andD. malerkotliana, while the former reveals a complete reproductive isolation from the other two, the cross betweenD. bipectinata andD. malerkotliana is compatible in both directions. The hybrid males are fully sterile while the females are not only fertile but also show a high percentage insemination in the backcrosses. The cross betweenD. bipectinata female andD. malerkotliana male is more productive than the reciprocal one. The relationship between these three species has also been discussed in the light of these observations.
