Abstract
Reported are the subcellular distributions of selenium (Se), gold, glutathione peroxidase, and enzyme markers for nuclei, mitochondria, lysosomes, and soluble fraction of rat liver and kidney in normal and gold-injected rats. Gold thioglucose increased the Se content of kidney and liver and decreased Se-dependent gluthathione peroxidase activity. The Se in control liver and kidney was found predominantly in the soluble fraction: 73% in liver and 62% in kidney. The Se redistribution in these tissues closely followed the subcellular distribution of gold and Se concentrated mainly in fractions with high lysosomal enzyme-specific activity. The nuclear fraction of kidneys from gold-injected rats contained 46% of the gold and 30% of the Se and had an eightfold increase in lysosomal enzyme-marker activity over activity in the nuclear fraction from kidneys of control rats.
