The use of cast Ti−48Al−2Cr−2Nb in jet engines

Abstract

Although it has been recognized for almost three decades that titanium-aluminide systems have the potential for significant weight reductions in jet engines, Ti−48Al−2Cr−2Nb has emerged as the first to enter commercial jet engine service. Cast gamma titanium aluminides are evolving from an intriguing idea into the next materials revolution for aircraft engines. Its potential appears to be similar to the changes caused by the introduction of cast titanium alloys in the 1970s.

P. Bartolotta earned his Ph.D. in mechanical and aerospace engineering at Case Western Reserve University in 1991. He is currently a materials research engineer at NASA Lewis Research Center.

J. Barrett earned his B.S. in metallurgical engineering at California Polytechnic State University in 1985. He is currently manager of materials and technology at Precision Castparts Corporation. CC Structurals. Mr. Barrett is a member of TMS.

T. Kelly earned his M.S. in materials science at LeHigh University in 1976. He is currently a senior staff engineer at General Electric Aircraft Engines.

R. Smashey earned his B.S. in metallurgical engineering at Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy in 1963. He is currently a senior staff engineer at General Electric Aircraft Engines. Mr. Smashey is also a member of TMS.
