Abstract
I recall the intense life of Oreste Piccioni (1915–2002) and his scientific results in Italy, from his arrival at the University of Rome in 1939 to his important discoveries during the period 1941–1947. It was during these years that interest in the muon (the mesotron) appeared in all its relevance. For a long time the muon was confused with the meson foreseen by Hideki Yukawa; the clarification of this misunderstanding, and the precise measurement of the lifetime and the properties of the muon, are described in this note. Other fundamental contributions by Oreste Piccioni to the history of science are the regeneration of real particles, and the K meson in particular, and the discovery of the antineutron. Beginning in 1985 Oreste Piccioni studied some general problems of quantum mechanics, and in particular the so called Einstein, Podolsky, Rosen paradox. He was a foreign member of the Accademia dei Lincei since 1988.
