Summary
Sufficient knowledge about aerosol filtration is now available to design an optimal filter for air sterilization on a rational basis. Such a design consists of (1) assessing the filtration job to be accomplished. A logical design is based on a microorganism loading of 50 organisms per cubic foot of air and a probability of only a one-in-a-thousand chance of a single contaminant penetrating the filter during the course of the fermentation; (2) determining the thickness of a particular filter material required for the job. This thickness should be based upon conditions producing the minimal filter efficiency. When experimental data are lacking this efficiency can be calculated from theoretical relationships for collection due only to interception evaluated at the air velocity at which inertial effects become negligible; (3) selecting the filter size in terms of cross sectional area which results in minimal total costs; (4) comparing the total costs of optimally sized filters compounded from different material and selecting that material and its corresponding filter design which results in lowest total cost.
