Abstract

This is a preliminary survey of the use of plants for medicinal purposes in the Samoan Islands, the purpose of which is to pioneer the way for a more detailed study of specific plants and remedies. In addition to a survey of the literature, in 1961 and 1962 interviews were conducted in Samoa to determine what plants were being used medicinally by the Samoans at the time. The local names, habits, descriptions, plant parts used, and uses of 154 species (146 angiosperms, 4 ferns, and 4 nonvascular cryptogams) are presented in tabular form.
