Biochemical systematics and fungi

Conclusion

In the foregoing paragraphs I have discussed in outline several areas where biochemistry has been able to make a positive contribution to fungal taxonomy. The review is not intended to be exhaustive, but rather to alert classical fungal taxonomists to the contribution biochemists may make to their specialty. The number of species studied, although still very small compared with the number of species described, is steadily increasing, and it is therefore expected that comparative biochemistry will in the future play an increasingly important role in fungal taxonomy.
