Long-Term survival ofCorynebacterium sepedonicum on contaminated surfaces and in infected potato stems

Abstract

The survival of the ring rot bacterium,Corynebacterium sepedonicum, on contaminated surfaces and in infected stems was investigated by root inoculating potato stem cuttings with aqueous suspensions prepared from these materials. The pathogen survived for 24 mo on contaminated surfaces of burlap, kraft paper, and polyethylene plastic held at 12% relative humidity (RH) at either 5 or 20°C. It persisted for less than 14 mo on surfaces held at 94% RH at either temperature. Infectious ring rot bacteria were also recovered from dried, infected potato stems held for 26 mo in an unheated machine shed. These results emphasize the importance of strict sanitation and disinfestation procedures in maintaining potato seed stocks free of bacterial ring rot.

Resumen

La sobrevivencia deCorynebacterium sepedonicum, bacteria causante de la pudrición anular, fue estudiada en superficies contaminadas y en tallos infectados, inoculando las raices de esquejes de tallos de papa con suspensiones acuosas preparadas de esos materiales. El patógeno sobrevivié por 24 meses en superficies contaminadas de arpilleras (yute), papel Kraft y plástico polietileno mantenidos a 12% de humedad relativa (HR) y a 5 ó 20° C. Persistió menos de 14 meses en superficies mantenidas a 94% HR a ambas temperaturas. Bacterias patogénicas causantes de la pudrición anular fueron también recuperadas de tallos secos e infectados de papa mantenidos por 20 meses en un cobertizo de maquinaria sin calefacción. Estos resultados enfatizan la importancia de estrictos procedimientos de sanidad y desinfección con el propósito de mantener los lotes de semillas de papa libres de pudrición anular.
